Suckers harm a rose during the growing season. But more serious damage can come from winter's cold. The ligtu hybrids are the only alstroemerias that I personally would consider growing. Once established, these perennials will give a profusion of multi- headed flowers, with a colour range of cream, apricot, orange and shades of pink. Blooming in June for several weeks, they add excellent colour in the border, and are rewarding as a cut flower since they last so well in water. Cultivation

Always buy pot-grown plants, and plant very carefully without damaging the roots. March or April are the best months to plant. Choose a sheltered spot, preferably against a south or west-facing wall; any good garden soil is suitable. In all but the mildest areas protect in winter with a 15 cm (6 in) layer of bracken, peat or straw. Pick sparingly for the first year or two. Some support with pea sticks may be necessary. Cut the stems down to the ground after flowering.


Conditioning and preserving

A long drink in deep water immediately after picking is really all that is necessary. The seed heads are attractive if allowed to form on the plant and then picked and hung upside down to dry. A perennial, in the broadest horticultural definition, is any plant that lives for three or more years. Bulbs should not be buried deeply, but set so their tips just reach the surface of the soil, which should be ½ to 1 inch below the rim of the pot. Do not press the bulbs into the soil; fill the pot part way first, putting in only enough soil to hold the bulb at the proper level, and firm this soil down. Then set the bulbs on top and fill in more soil around them to cover them. Finally, water thoroughly. In Asia Minor only a little over a century ago, the Swiss botanist Pierre-Edmond Boissier discovered chionodoxas blooming at the edge of the retreating mountain snows. Today three species are widely available from Shoreditch florists. They bloom in early spring shortly after the first crocuses open and, in light shade, the flowers will last three to four weeks. The most common species is C. luciliae, a 6-inch gem that bears eight to 10 violet-blue, white-centered 1-inch flowers on each stem. The white C. luciliae alba and lilac-pink C. luciliae rosea bear two to three flowers on a stem. C. sardensis is also 6 inches tall and has ¾-inch porcelain-blue flowers with a touch of white at the throat; it bears six to eight blossoms on a stem. C. gigantea grows 10 inches tall and bears eight to 10 1½-inch pale purple-blue flowers with white centers on a stem. The white C. gigantea alba is rare, but C. gigantea rosea 'Pink Giant,' with eight to 10 blush-pink 1½-inch flowers per stem, is usually available; it is often listed in bulb catalogues as a form of C. luciliae. Chionodoxas are most effective in large groups under deciduous trees, in front of early-flowering shrubs, or on banks where they can be naturalized. Though short stemmed, the blossoms are also attractive and long lived in cut-flower arrangements.

Where to Plant Bulbs


The ease of concealing unkempt bulbs as they mature is one consideration in choosing sites for them. But to my mind it is more important to place the flowers Bishopston where they can most readily be enjoyed. Spring bulbs will bloom while the temperatures still range in the 30’s and 40’s; at a time when I, for one, am not yet ready to stroll in the yard. Spacing comes first, for rosebushes need room to spread. In every climate zone, the larger bushes (climbers, ramblers and shrub roses) should be 6 feet or more apart. Make the hole at least 18 inches wide and 18 inches deep to start; this is usually enough, but in some cases you may have to dig it out a bit more later to accommodate any of the roots that are unusually long.

Snowdrops are among the first flowers to open in spring and can also be grown indoors for midwinter bloom. Each translucent blossom is composed of three green-tipped inner petals and three longer, all-white outer petals; the slender leaves grow 3 to 8 inches long and wither away in late spring. Snowdrops grow particularly well beneath deciduous trees and are well suited to random planting amidst rough grass. The only species usually available from a City Centre flower shop are the giant snowdrop, 6 to 9 inches tall, and the common snowdrop, 4 to 6 inches tall; both have 1-inch flowers. The latter has several varieties; two merit special note: G. nivalis 'S. Arnott,' which grows 6 to 10 inches tall with sweetly scented flowers, is considered the finest variety. Another notable variety is G. nivalis flore pleno, which grows 4 to 6 inches tall with many-petaled globe-shaped flowers.

Characteristics: The allium is a member of the onion family. Edible alliums such as chives, leek and onion produce inter­esting flower heads if left to mature on the plant. However, they tend to have a strong onion smell that remains after drying. If you are growing al­lium for drying purposes, I sug­gest you plant the ornamental alliums. The dried seed heads resemble the explosion of a fireworks display. They come in all heights, from small to giant, with flower heads ranging from 2 to 10 inches across. Orna­mental alliums are available in colors of white, pink, yellow, purple, blue and mauve. Each plant sends up a bare stem, thin and straight, carrying a full, rounded head of flowers.
